Casing
The trim around door and window openings.
Base
The trim where the wall meets the floor.
Crown
The trim where the wall meets the ceiling.
Profile
The shape of the molding seen from the end.
Linear feet

Poplar
A smooth, even-grained hardwood that takes paint very well. A common choice for painted trim.
Pine
A softwood that is easy to work with. Used for painted trim and for a more rustic stained look.
Oak
A strong hardwood with a pronounced grain, popular for stained trim and stair parts.
Maple
A dense, light-colored hardwood with a fine grain, for stained or painted trim.
Mahogany
A rich, reddish hardwood used for stained trim and exterior millwork.
MDF
Medium-density fiberboard. A smooth, stable, primed material for painted trim.
